Interviewing a Small Business Owner

At the outset, please give our readers a glimpse of yourself.

My name is Angeline Gormley. I am a Christian, military wife, and mom. I am also a healthcare writer and digital creator of workbooks and journals. I enjoy working on financial independence while being a hands-on wife and mom.

Describe your brand/blog and the products or services you are offering.

I create workbooks based on my background as a Speech-language Pathology and also a Master’s of Education graduate. These workbooks are based on specific skills that parents, caregivers, and educators can develop, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, or articulation. I also create wellness journals for adults to help them build habits and improve their lifestyles. I use my blog as an avenue to offer these products. Aside from that, I partner with other brands to promote their products as well.

Where does your interest in entrepreneurship/blogging come from – how did you start?

When I was around 12 years old, my mom encouraged me to make my own shirt designs at a website called CafePress. I started making sales at that time and realized how powerful the internet is. I didn’t put in capital, just my time and ideas, and I realized how powerful the internet is. After that, my deep interest in being an online entrepreneur cultivated over the years.

What makes your brand stand out in the market?

So, my brand Life With Gormleys is centred around family and spiritual-based topics. I create blog posts about usual personal, family, lifestyle, and spiritual problems targeted to women. I believe it is unique because of my educational and spiritual background, which makes me a trusted authority on the topics I create.

What do you think is the toughest problem for businesswomen?

I think the toughest problem for businesswomen is balance. As businesswomen, we may have roles that coincide with these entrepreneurial pursuits. For me, that’s being a mom of a toddler, taking care of my household, and also my part-time work as a writer. I try to juggle all of these and try to do my best in all the roles I have. For me, there are good and not-so-good days. The key is learning how to manage time, being consistent, and keeping your desire burning to succeed.

What’s a day in your life like as an entrepreneur?

I wake up at least an hour or two earlier before my son wakes up. After I send off my husband to work, I do some part-time work in the morning. During my son’s nap, I finish some of it as well and then work on either a new blog post, Youtube video, a new workbook, or a journal. I also automate some marketing tasks to help me.

Everybody is different, and everybody follows different techniques to deal with pain, but these are some of the best ways to boost mood when you start feeling yourself getting down.

Who is your target audience? How do you keep your clients happy and satisfied?

My target clients are mostly women and moms, but it can vary depending on who needs my products. Some teachers do need my products, as well as parents of children with special needs. I keep my clients happy and satisfied through the business philosophy I learned called “Kaizen”. This means that I continuously see points of improvement and optimize from there.

After all this success and failure, what do you struggle with now?

I struggle mostly with balancing my time and energy. There are some days I just feel like time is pressing or I am tired. I would want to keep a steady pace throughout the week so I can be fully productive.

How do you achieve a balance between your personal and professional life?

I think the key is to keep your two worlds separate especially during the weekends. The weekends are a time for me to rest, recharge, and do things I truly love. I love going to new places, spending time with my family, and reading.

What is your future plan to keep growing in the market?

My future plan is to continue making more workbooks and journals, and I have recently upped my game in the Amazon Marketplace. This is to cater to individuals looking for specific solutions to their problems through the Amazon online retail website.

Tell me about a favourite book that inspires you.

My recent favourite book is The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. This book talked about the difference between successful and unsuccessful people, which is the Slight Edge. The Slight Edge is just the little consistent habits you do every day towards growth, the easy, simple, but seemingly uncomfortable tasks–but these are also the things that are easy not to do. By doing these things over time, people build their way towards success. It is a very motivating and inspiring book.

What is your favourite quote?

My recent favourite quote is from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Do the thing, and you shall have the power”. I believe this applies to entrepreneurship–when you take action and do something instead of just wishful thinking, you gain power and success. It may not be like that at the beginning, but you will gradually see results.

Additionally, as a Christian, one of my life verses is from the Bible, of the book Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This reminds me that God is in control of my life, and as long as I surrender and dedicate my pursuits to Him, my life will always be filled with hope.

What piece of advice would you give to emerging women entrepreneurs/bloggers?

My piece of advice is to find something that you are deeply interested in and pursue it non-stop. The path to success is long and winding, and some people give up before they even get there. Even if you don’t see any results, in the beginning, don’t fret, just keep on going. See what areas you can improve on and make these slight changes. After getting past disappointments and failures, you will see results for your work.

Thanks for your time Angeline, it was great talking to you.
